A genome is an organism’s complete set of genetic instructions needed to build that organism and allow it to grow and develop. The human genome is comprised of approximately 3 billion base pairs of DNA.
In the past many people mistakenly assumed that the presence of a certain gene or single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) meant they were destined to experience the associated disease. However, most genes have flexible expressions and complex interactions among multiple genes and the environment affect gene expression.
These interactions – known as epigenetic influences – include diet, chemical exposure, stress response, and the presence of other SNPs. A specialty diagnostic panel, which assays functional nutritional status, along with genetic SNPs, such as MTHFR, COMT, APOE, and TNF-a, aids the clinician in personalizing diet, lifestyle, and supplementation recommendations to positively impact physical and biochemical function
